Driving a medicine into the deeper layers of the skin with ultrasound — the "needle-free" method.
Phonophoresis drives medicines, or active cosmetic preparations, into the deeper layers of the skin with ultrasound. The method is known as "needle-free" treatment: the drug passes through the skin without breaking it.
How it works
Ultrasound waves create vibration at cell level in the tissue — a kind of micro-massage. That speeds blood and lymph flow, reduces swelling, and strengthens cell metabolism and the supply of oxygen to the tissue, supporting repair.
How it differs from iontophoresis
Both methods deliver a drug without a needle, but the carrier differs: a weak electric current in iontophoresis, ultrasound in phonophoresis. Which is chosen depends on the area, on the properties of the drug and on the doctor's judgement.
When Phonophoresis is prescribed
- Musculoskeletal: osteoarthritis, arthritis, osteochondrosis, lower back pain
- Muscle strains and recovery after injury
- Neuritis, radiculitis and various inflammatory processes
- Cosmetology: facial rejuvenation, restoring collagen fibres, pigmentation
