A breathing session in a salt environment — used in respiratory and skin programmes.
Speleotherapy is a quiet breathing session in an environment saturated with salt aerosol. The guest rests lying down and breathes air enriched with salt particles. The procedure is painless, needs no medication, and is considered for a wide range of ages, from children to older guests. Within a naftalan course it sits between the heat procedures as a quiet interval.
How a session in the salt room runs
The session takes place in a salt room where humidity, temperature and the concentration of the aerosol are controlled. All that is asked of the guest is to lie quietly and breathe normally — no special clothing, no preparation. The length of the session and the number of sessions in the course follow from a medical examination; no recovery time is needed and you can move straight on to the rest of the day.
How speleotherapy acts on the airways
Salt aerosol acts on the lining of the airways and helps make breathing easier. The session itself is calming at the same time:
The effects of the salt aerosol
- Easier breathing and less coughing
- Support for clearing the bronchi
- Inflammation in the airways settling
- A calmer nervous system and better sleep
- A favourable effect on the skin
- Less general fatigue
Who it does not suit, and the regime for children
Speleotherapy is prescribed after a medical examination: acute infection, a raised temperature and certain lung conditions may mean a session is postponed. The procedure is not part of the naftalan baths themselves, but it runs alongside the course and makes a good recovery break after heat procedures. For children the session is planned separately, at a regime suited to their age.
