The reputation of naftalan: marvels and myths

Naftalan oil

The stories told about naftalan, from the museum of crutches to "it cures everything", and which of them hold up.

Few substances have this many stories attached. For more than a century naftalan oil has been described as a marvel, a wonder, black gold. Some of those words rest on real observation and some are simply advertising — the two are worth separating.

The museum of crutches

The best-known exhibit in the Naftalan History Museum is the collection of crutches and walking sticks left behind by guests who recovered. It is a real collection and part of the town's memory. It is not statistics, though: the museum does not count the people it did not help. The story is moving; it is not evidence.

"Black gold"

Oil in general is called black gold because it is burned for energy. The paradox of naftalan oil is that it does not burn — its value is not as fuel but as a remedy. In that sense the phrase sits well: a whole town's economy was built on an oil nobody can set alight.

"Magical" and "miraculous"

The observed effects are real and studied: inflammation subsides, pain eases, circulation improves, joints move more freely. Not every detail of the mechanism is understood, and that should be said plainly. The word "magic" tends to be used to fill that gap — it is better to acknowledge the gap honestly.

Three claims that do not hold

"It cures everything" — no: in some complaints it reduces pain and inflammation, in others it is not prescribed at all. "People walk out after one bath" — no: the effect accumulates over a course, and feeling nothing in the first days is normal. "Results guaranteed" — no sanatorium can guarantee a cure, and hearing such a promise is itself a warning.

What can be relied on

The list of indications and contraindications, the protocol of the procedure (37–38 °C, up to ten minutes, at least forty minutes of rest), the length of a course, and what a doctor tells you about your own case. The rest is literature — interesting, sometimes beautiful, but not a treatment plan.

The facts: naftalan oil and contraindications.
