Treatment
The conditions in which naftalan treatment is not given, and what is checked before a course begins.
Naftalan does not suit everyone, and that is not a weakness of the treatment but its nature: a heat procedure puts a load on the body, so whether it fits is checked beforehand.
The main contraindications
- Acute inflammation and fever
- Malignancy
- Severe heart and kidney failure
- A tendency to bleeding and clotting disorders
- Pregnancy
- Individual intolerance and allergic reaction to naftalan
- Active tuberculosis and acute infectious disease
The list is not exhaustive and cannot be. Blood pressure, heart rhythm, thyroid, the state of the skin and the medicines you take are each assessed separately.
Allergy and intolerance
A reaction to naftalan is uncommon but possible: redness, itching, irritated skin. If you have reacted to naftalan preparations before, say so at the examination. Where there is doubt, the doctor may begin with a test application on a small area.
When the full bath is ruled out
That is not the end of a course. To lighten the load, an application, a local bath or a four-chamber bath may be chosen instead; physiotherapy, massage and the salt room, which do not involve the oil, stay in the programme.
What misuse leads to
An unsupervised temperature, a session run too long, a procedure taken in an acute phase or an intolerance nobody checked can bring skin irritation, an allergic reaction, dizziness or a flare-up of the complaint. This is why a do-it-yourself naftalan bath at home is not advisable.
On the substance itself: naftalan oil.
