Naftalan products and buying them

Naftalan oil

Naftalan-based ointments, creams, shampoos and gels — what they are made of, where they are sold, and how they differ from the sanatorium bath.

Most people meet naftalan first in a chemist rather than in a bath. Naftalan ointment, naftalan cream, shampoo, gel and balms are made from the same raw material, but they are not the same treatment.

What they are made of

Pharmacy preparations are usually based on deresined naftalan: the crude with part of its irritant components removed. How much naftalan a product contains varies by manufacturer, so two different ointments are not the same thing.

The forms they come in

  • Ointments and creams — the commonest form; for skin complaints and joint or muscle pain.
  • Shampoo — for complaints involving the scalp.
  • Gels and shower products — everyday care.
  • Cosmetics — care ranges with naftalan added.

Where they are sold

These preparations are sold through pharmacies and the manufacturers' own channels. We sell no preparation and recommend no brand — which product and which regimen suit you is for your own doctor to say, particularly where a skin disease, pregnancy or a child is involved.

Instructions and dose

Every preparation carries its instructions in the box. We publish no dose, frequency or duration here: that is a prescription, and a web page cannot give one.

Home baths and raw oil

Taking a bath in raw oil at home is not advisable. With the temperature, the duration and the number of sessions unsupervised you do not even get what an ointment gives you — what remains is the risk of irritation, an allergic reaction and a flare-up. A sanatorium bath differs precisely in that a doctor sets those three: 37–38 °C, a session of up to ten minutes, and at least forty minutes of rest.

On the substance and the bath: naftalan oil.
