The town and the region
Naftalan is not in Baku: it is a separate town 320 km west of the capital — about four hours by car, with train and transfer options.
"A naftalan sanatorium in Baku" is the commonest mistaken search, and understandably so: to someone who does not know Azerbaijan, the country means Baku. Naftalan is a separate town 320 kilometres west of the capital, and the treatment is given there, over the field.
Getting from Baku to Naftalan
- By car — about four hours on the motorway. A transfer is booked in advance.
- By train — the Baku–Ganja fast train takes about 3.5 hours, then 50 km by car.
- By bus — services run from Baku's coach station towards Ganja and Naftalan.
- By air — a domestic flight to Ganja airport (KVD), then 60 km.
Combining the two in one trip
Many guests do exactly that: land in Baku, spend a day or two in the capital, then move on to the course. The reverse works too — a few days in Baku after the course. When planning, remember that a course runs 10 to 14 days and the procedure days are continuous.
Naftalan procedures in Baku
There are centres in the capital offering naftalan-based procedures, but that is not the same as a sanatorium course over the field: the course format, the daily schedule, medical supervision and the dietary table do not come together there. If it is naftalan treatment you are after, the logical address is the town of Naftalan.
